The sonar readings were impossible. Lieutenant Maya Chen stared at the screen, watching the outline of a city appear beneath her destroyer-towers, domes, streets laid out in perfect grids.

"That's not a natural formation," her ensign said.

Maya ordered a drone deployed. The images took her breath away-an ancient city, preserved under a glass-like dome, its buildings intact, its streets empty.

"Any signs of life?" she asked.

"No. Wait-there's a light."

A figure emerged from one of the buildings-a woman in a silver suit, swimming toward the drone. She placed her hand on the glass, and the dome opened.

"All hands, brace for impact!" Maya shouted.

The destroyer was pulled downward, through the opening, into a vast air pocket. The ship settled on a stone dock, its hull intact.

The woman swam to the surface, removing her helmet. Her face was young, her eyes ancient.

"Welcome to Atlantis," she said. "I am Captain Elara of the Temporal Navy. This city was sunk in 10,000 BCE, preserved by a time bubble. We have been waiting for someone to find us."

Maya stared at the impossible city. "Why did you bring us here?"

"There is a rift beneath the city, a tear in time. If you destroy it with your depth charges, the bubble will collapse, and Atlantis will return to its proper time-to its proper fate."

"What will happen to the people?"

Elara's face was sad. "They will die. But history will be restored. The timeline will be healed."

Maya hesitated. The crew was watching, their faces tense.

"Do it," Elara said. "We have lived long enough."

Maya gave the order. The destroyer dropped its depth charges, then sailed out of the dome as it closed behind them.

The explosion lit the deep. The city shimmered, then faded.

When the sea calmed, the sonar showed only empty water.

Maya never spoke of what she had seen. But every year, on the anniversary, she sailed to the coordinates and dropped flowers into the water.

"Rest well," she whispered.

And somewhere, in the deep, the people of Atlantis returned to their proper time-not to life, but to peace.

Maya never forgot them. She never stopped wondering if Elara had survived.

And sometimes, just sometimes, she thought she saw a light beneath the waves-faint, distant, old-a reminder that some cities are meant to be lost, and some guardians are meant to wait.
